"Demon Masks and Timelines" Art Exhibit |
Location: Rankin Art Gallery
Retired Big Rapids High School art teacher James MaloneBeach will exhibit his work titled "Demon Masks and Timelines" at the Rankin Center Art Gallery. The February 16 reception will feature remarks by the artist and refreshments.
Created by pressing stoneware clay into a stylized plaster mold of the artist's face, each series of mask collections in the exhibit represents a timeline of MaloneBeach's personal response to a family, local or national event.
MaloneBeach's work has been shown at numerous venues in the United States and Portugal, with permanent collections of his work in the Newark Museum, the Swedish Royal Cabinet of Coins and Medals, the British Museum and the National Museum of the Netherlands.

Mecosta County - Yello Jug Old Drugs Program |
The Mecosta county Medical Center will hold a drive to collect unused, unwanted or expired medications in the hospital lobby. The collection is in conjunction with the Yello Jug Old Drugs program and the Big Rapids Department of Public Safety.
The following will be accepted: coltrolled substances, prescription drugs and over the counter medications. (They are unable to accept medications classified as hazardous wastes.)

Introductory Welding for the Artist or Hobbyist |
Location: Swan Building Welding Lab 116 (parking without permit is available directly south of the building, off of Ives St.)
Ferris State's Welding program offers this popular series demonstrating various welding and cutting processes. A great opportunity for artists and hobbyists with little or no welding experience to develop their skills, this workshop will feature such processes as oxyacetylene, gas metal arc and resistance welding, as well as plasma arc cutting.
Participants will learn proper techniques and have the opportunity to make their own simple metal sculptures under the instruction of associate professor David Murray of Ferris' Welding Engineering Technology department.
Pre-register for free admittance by calling (231) 591-2536 or emailing weisc@ferris.edu; class size is limited to 20 participants. All supplies donated by the Ferris Welding program. Safety gear will be available for purchase at the first class for approximately $25.

CCA - Middle School Band Pre-Festival Concert |
Location: Crossroads Charter Academy Auditorium, 215 W. Spruce St., Big Rapids.
The Crossroads Charter Academy middle school band has been active at Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association district and state festivals for 11 of the 13 years that Crossroads has been a public school. The 11 years have been met with great success, including many first division ratings for the band at both district and state festivals.
Under the direction of Debe Mitchell, director of music at CCA, both the middle and high school bands are preparing for the 2012 MSBOA band festival.

Martha Folts Harpsichord Recital |
Location: St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 323 S. State St., Big Rapids.
Harpsichordist Martha Folts presents a musical tour of Europe with English, French, Italian, German and Spanish music from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.
Folts is a founding member of La Gente d'Orfeo, an ensemble which specializes in 17th-century Italian repertoire and tours in the Midwest. She has recorded for the Delos, Musical Heritage Society, Harpsicat and Naxos labels. Her most recent recordings include the complete Essercizi, 1738 of Domenico Scarlatti (Harpsicat Records); and works attritubed to Frescobaldi from 17th century manuscript sources (Naxos label).
This exhibit complements Folts' programming for area elementary schools, in which she will perform harpsichord music for local schoolchildren.
